A client may already have eyelash extensions and then go through a stressful period at work, exams, family problems, poor sleep or anxiety. Another client may simply feel nervous during the lash appointment itself. In both situations, the body does respond to stress. Cortisol, catecholamines, autonomic nervous-system activity and other signalling systems can change. Psychological stress can also influence sweating, the skin and hair follicles. But does any of that actually make eyelash-extension adhesive fail? That is where we need to separate what science supports from what beauty folklore likes to invent.
The answer to the question above is "Yes." Psychological stress activates several interconnected biological systems. One of the best known is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, commonly called the HPA axis, which influences cortisol production. Stress also activates autonomic pathways involved in functions such as heart rate and sweating. This response is not confined entirely to the brain and adrenal glands. Research has identified stress-related signalling systems within human skin and hair follicles themselves. Hair follicles can express components of an HPA-like neuroendocrine system, including corticotropin-releasing hormone and related receptors. So the underlying question is scientifically legitimate. Stress really can alter the biological environment of the skin and hair follicle. What has not been established is that these changes directly weaken eyelash-extension adhesive.
Can Cortisol Reach Your Eyelashes?
This question became particularly interesting in 2026. A recent experimental study examined cortisol in human tear fluid after participants underwent an acute laboratory stress test. Tear cortisol increased following the stressful condition and was positively associated with salivary cortisol. The researchers proposed tear fluid as a possible non-invasive way of measuring acute stress responses. That gives us evidence that cortisol associated with an acute stress response can indeed be detected in tears. But there is a very important second question. Does cortisol in tears damage eyelash-extension adhesive? At present, we have no good evidence demonstrating that it does. The fact that cortisol can be measured in tear fluid does not mean it reaches concentrations capable of disrupting a cured cyanoacrylate bond. Those are two completely different scientific questions. So we should not tell a stressed client that her body is releasing cortisol through her tears and therefore dissolving her lash adhesive. That would sound wonderfully scientific while skipping the inconvenient part where nobody has actually demonstrated it.
Can Stress Make Your Eyes Water?
Sometimes, but stress does not affect everyone’s eyes in the same way. Research into the relationship between psychological conditions and the ocular surface has repeatedly found associations between anxiety, depression and dry-eye symptoms. A recent meta-analysis also identified stress and anxiety among factors associated with dry eye disease. Blinking itself is also influenced by psychological and emotional states, and changes in blinking can affect tear-film stability and ocular comfort. This means a stressed person may experience dry, irritated or uncomfortable eyes rather than simply producing more tears. For eyelash extensions, the practical issue is again what follows. An irritated eye may be rubbed. A watery eye may be wiped. A dry eye may encourage repeated touching around the eyelid. Those behaviours are much easier to connect to extension wear than making an unsupported claim that stress hormones chemically destroy adhesive.
Can Stress Make You Sweat More?
This relationship is considerably better established. Psychological sweating is a recognised physiological response to emotional stimuli including stress and anxiety. A systematic review found that psychological sweating can occur across the body but is particularly evident in areas including the face, palms, soles and underarms. The response is largely controlled through autonomic pathways activating sweat glands. Does that mean stress sweat ruins eyelash extensions? Again, not automatically. Someone who becomes hot or sweaty when nervous may wipe the forehead and eye area more frequently. Sweat may also mix with skincare, makeup and oils present around the face. For lash aftercare, the useful question is therefore not whether stress sweat has some unique chemical power over adhesive. It is whether increased perspiration changes how frequently you touch, wipe or clean the lash area. That is where conscious aftercare becomes relevant.
Does Stress Make Your Skin Oilier?
This is another claim that should not be repeated casually. It is common to hear that stress automatically increases oil production and therefore causes poor eyelash retention. Human evidence does not justify such a simple conclusion. A prospective study that compared adolescents during high-stress examination periods with lower-stress periods found no significant difference in measured sebum production, even though acne severity was associated with stress. That study concerned adolescents and acne rather than eyelash extensions, so it cannot settle the question for every adult client. But it does demonstrate why we should be cautious about the simplistic statement that stress always makes the skin more oily. If an individual notices changes in their skin during stressful periods, that experience can be discussed. We should not turn it into a universal biological rule.
Can Stress Affect Your Natural Eyelashes?
Potentially, but this is where the evidence requires particularly careful interpretation. Human eyelashes are living hairs with their own growth cycle. Research characterising human eyelash follicles estimated an active growth phase of approximately 34 days and a complete cycle of roughly 90 days. Individual lashes are therefore constantly occupying different stages of growth and shedding. An extension is bonded to a natural eyelash. If that natural eyelash sheds, the extension attached to it leaves too. That is normal shedding, not adhesive failure. Stress research provides biological reasons to investigate whether prolonged stress might influence hair cycling. Experimental work has shown that stress-related signalling pathways can affect hair follicles. In mice, stress has induced premature transition from active growth into the regression phase through neuroimmune pathways involving substance P. Human scalp follicles studied outside the body have also responded to substance P with premature catagen development. Other work has demonstrated that human scalp hair follicles possess their own stress-responsive neuroendocrine systems involving corticotropin-releasing hormone. That is fascinating biology. It is not, however, evidence that being nervous before a Tuesday lash appointment will suddenly make your eyelashes shed on Wednesday.
Does Chronic Stress Cause Eyelash Shedding?
We do not currently have strong eyelash-specific evidence showing that ordinary psychological stress predictably accelerates human eyelash shedding. Research linking stress with hair-cycle disruption has concentrated mainly on scalp hair, animal models and laboratory-grown follicles. Telogen effluvium, a form of diffuse scalp-hair shedding, can be associated with physiological or emotional stress, but even reviews of that condition emphasise that its mechanisms are complex and incompletely understood. We therefore should not take scalp-hair research and casually convert it into the statement that stress causes lash-extension loss. A more defensible conclusion is that chronic or substantial stress can interact with human hair biology, but whether this produces a meaningful change in eyelash cycling or extension retention for an individual client remains uncertain. That uncertainty is scientifically important.
What About Cortisol and Hair Follicles?
Cortisol deserves particular attention because it is so often described simply as “the stress hormone”. Research suggests that cortisol participates in complex signalling within the skin and hair follicle. A meta-analysis examining hair cortisol found that groups exposed to ongoing chronic stress had higher hair cortisol concentrations overall, although relationships varied considerably depending on the type of stress and psychological condition studied. Research on scalp hair follicles also suggests that stress-related hormones and neuropeptides may influence follicular activity. But there are two completely separate questions here. One concerns whether stress biology can influence the natural hair follicle. The other concerns whether cortisol chemically compromises an artificial eyelash-extension bond. Evidence concerning the first question exists. Evidence establishing the second does not. That distinction prevents an interesting biological discussion from becoming misinformation wearing a lab coat.
Could Stress Affect Retention Indirectly Through Behaviour?
This may actually be one of the most practically important pathways. When people are stressed, their routines can change. Some people touch their faces more. Some rub their eyes when tired. Some pick at things without noticing. Some skip their evening cleansing routine because they are exhausted. Others sleep badly and wake up with their face pressed into the pillow. There is scientific literature linking anxiety with body-focused repetitive behaviours such as hair pulling and skin picking, although these are specific behavioural conditions and should not be confused with normal nervous habits. A recent systematic review found modest associations between anxiety severity and body-focused repetitive behaviour severity among affected populations. For ordinary lash clients, we do not need a psychiatric explanation. A far simpler observation is enough. If stress changes how frequently you rub, pull, pick, wipe or neglect the lash area, it can change the conditions under which the extensions are being worn. The behaviour may matter more than the hormone.
Does Poor Sleep During Stress Matter?
Stress and sleep often arrive as an irritating package deal. Poor sleep can change how someone feels and behaves the following day, including fatigue and eye discomfort. Sleep disturbance has also become an area of increasing interest in hair research. A 2026 systematic review examining sleep and hair-loss disorders found associations between sleep disturbance and several hair-loss conditions, while emphasising that most of the available evidence remains observational and that causality is not yet clear.
