Demystifying Lip Blush: Conceptions and Misconceptions

Lip Blush before and after results by Lena Utmost Beauty in Balwyn, Melbourne, showing healed semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo treatment.

This anecdote is from my husband:

"It was a cold winter morning in Melbourne in 2017. I was driving to Deakin University, Burwood Campus, when I stopped at a red traffic light. As usual, my mind was wandering through different aspects of my PhD research while I was absent-mindedly looking around. Suddenly, I noticed the lady in the car next to me applying lipstick. The traffic light turned green and I drove ahead. When I looked into my rear-view mirror a few seconds later, she was still applying her lipstick and had not even noticed that the light had changed. Other drivers started honking their horns before she finally moved through the intersection, after several cars had already missed their chance to pass through the Nunawading junction."

When he told me this story, my immediate response was simple. If she had already had Lip Blush, she would not have needed to apply lipstick while sitting behind the traffic lights. She would also have avoided distracting herself while driving. That conversation became one of the reasons why I wanted to write this article.

What is Lip Blush?

Lip Blush is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo treatment that enhances or corrects the natural colour of your lips. One of the most common misconceptions is that it permanently changes the colour of your lips. It does not. The pigment gradually fades over time (normally over 3 years!), which is why many clients return for colour refresh appointments after one or two years, depending on their skin, lifestyle, and personal preference. Lip Blush can make your lips appear up to 1 mm fuller, creating an effect similar to that of lip filler, but without adding volume. It enhances the natural shape and definition of your lips, giving them a more balanced and beautiful appearance. Choosing the right colour is one of the most important parts of the procedure. Some clients prefer a brighter and fresher appearance, while others simply want to restore colour that has naturally faded over the years. Selecting the right technician is equally important. A beautiful result depends not only on the pigment itself, but also on proper consultation, colour selection, hygiene, technique, and aftercare. This is what I refer to as the psychology of Lip Blush.

The Psychology of Lip Blushing

People often think Lip Blush is simply about choosing a colour and starting the procedure. In my experience, there is much more to it. First, have Lip Blush done only when you are mentally ready for it. Some people feel pressured by social media or by the experiences of their friends. If you are uncertain, do more research first. Read about the procedure, understand the healing process, and learn about both the benefits and the potential limitations before making your decision.

Second, do your own research about the treatment and choose a technician whom you genuinely trust. If you do not trust the technician, do not proceed. Cosmetic tattooing requires confidence in the person performing the procedure, not only in their technical ability but also in their communication, professionalism, and hygiene.

Third, understand the realities and the misconceptions surrounding Lip Blush. One misconception is that Lip Blush lasts forever. It does not. Another misconception is that cosmetic tattooing is inherently unsafe. Like many cosmetic procedures, safety depends largely on the standards of the clinic. When proper infection control procedures, sterile equipment, and high-quality pigments are used, Lip Blush is considered a safe cosmetic procedure for suitable candidates.

Finally, ask questions. A professional technician should willingly explain the procedure, discuss the pigments being used, review your medical history, explain beforecare and aftercare, and answer your questions before you make your decision. A good consultation is as important as the procedure itself.

How We Perform Lip Blush at Lena Utmost Beauty

At Lena Utmost Beauty, every Lip Blush treatment begins long before the cosmetic tattoo machine is switched on. We begin with a detailed consultation. We discuss your expectations, the reasons you are considering Lip Blush, and whether the treatment is appropriate for you. We also explain the entire procedure, the healing process, and the realistic results you can expect.

Before starting the treatment, we review your medical history, complete the consent documentation, and carefully assess your natural lip colour. Together, we select a pigment that suits both your skin tone and your personal preferences. We also document the pigment colours used during your treatment for future reference.

During the procedure, we explain each stage as we work so that you understand what is happening. Once your treatment has been completed, we provide detailed aftercare instructions and remain available to answer your questions throughout the healing process.

Lip Blush is normally completed in two stages. The initial treatment creates the foundation, while the second appointment allows the colour to stabilise and enables us to make any necessary refinements. This second appointment is an essential part of achieving a predictable and long-lasting result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Wear Lipstick After Lip Blush?

Yes, absolutely.

Many clients still choose to wear lipstick on special occasions or when they would like a different shade. However, one of the main reasons people choose Lip Blush is that they no longer feel the need to apply lipstick every day. Keep in mind that Lip Blush is a semi-permanent treatment. The pigment gradually fades over time, and many clients choose occasional colour refresh appointments to maintain the appearance they enjoy.

Does Lip Blush hurt?

Most clients describe the treatment as uncomfortable rather than painful. A topical anaesthetic is used throughout the procedure to minimise discomfort, although everyone's pain tolerance is different.

How long does Lip Blush last?

For most clients, the colour lasts between two and three years. Factors such as skin type, sun exposure, skincare products, lifestyle, and individual healing all influence how long the pigment remains visible.

Is a touch-up necessary?

Yes. The second appointment is an important part of the treatment. It allows the pigment to stabilise after healing and enables any minor colour adjustments if necessary.

Can old Lip Blush or lip tattooing be corrected?

In many cases, yes. However, every previous cosmetic tattoo is different. We assess your lips during the consultation before recommending the most appropriate approach.

Who should avoid Lip Blush?

Certain medical conditions, pregnancy, breastfeeding, active infections, or a history of particular health conditions may make Lip Blush unsuitable or require medical clearance. We discuss these matters during your consultation.

When can I return to my normal routine?

Most clients resume their normal daily activities shortly after the procedure. However, following the recommended aftercare instructions is essential for achieving the best possible healing and colour retention.
