If you have booked a cosmetic tattoo appointment, such as Nano Brows, Powder Brows, Lip Blush or Eyeliner, you may have heard different advice about coffee, tea and other caffeinated drinks. Some practitioners recommend avoiding them before treatment, while others place little emphasis on them. This naturally raises an important question: Does caffeine really matter?
At Lena Utmost Beauty, our pre-care recommendations are informed by two complementary sources: the published literature and our practical experience working with cosmetic tattoo clients from Balwyn, Deepdene, Kew, Mont Albert and surrounding eastern suburbs of Melbourne. We also recognise that some recommendations are supported by stronger scientific evidence than others. Where appropriate, we explain the current evidence and acknowledge areas in which uncertainty remains.
Our Recommendation
As part of our routine pre-care instructions, we generally recommend limiting coffee, strong tea and other highly caffeinated beverages for approximately 24 hours before your cosmetic tattoo appointment. This recommendation is intended to help clients arrive feeling relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure. It also reflects common guidance found in professional cosmetic tattoo literature, although the scientific evidence regarding caffeine and cosmetic procedures is not always consistent. Our recommendation should therefore be understood as a practical pre-care measure, rather than as a statement that one cup of coffee will necessarily affect the outcome of your cosmetic tattoo.
Why Does Advice Differ?
One of the questions we are frequently asked is why different salons provide different instructions before cosmetic tattooing. The answer is that pre-care recommendations often draw on several sources of knowledge. Some are based on published scientific research, some on professional textbooks and clinical guidance, and others on the practical experience of practitioners who have worked with hundreds or thousands of clients. As a result, not every recommendation is supported by the same level of scientific evidence, and reasonable differences in practice do exist. Rather than presenting every recommendation as an established scientific fact, we believe it is more helpful to be transparent about what is currently known and where uncertainty remains.
Our Practical Experience
Over the years, we have found that clients generally have a more comfortable experience when they arrive well rested, normally hydrated and having eaten a regular meal before their appointment. Similarly, many clients appear more relaxed during lengthy cosmetic tattoo procedures when they have not consumed excessive amounts of caffeine immediately beforehand. These observations reflect our professional experience and should not be interpreted as proof that caffeine directly affects pigment retention, healing or treatment outcomes. Individual responses to caffeine vary considerably from person to person. Coffee Tea and Cosmetic Tattooing in Balwyn is a practised measure.
A Balanced Approach
Our goal is not to create unnecessary restrictions, but to help clients prepare for a comfortable and positive cosmetic tattoo experience. For most people, sensible preparation includes:
eating a normal meal before the appointment;
arriving well hydrated;
limiting alcohol before treatment;
reducing highly caffeinated drinks during the 24 hours before the appointment;
informing us about any relevant medical conditions, medications or supplements; and
following the individual pre-care instructions provided before your appointment.
Every client is different, and every cosmetic tattoo procedure is different. If you have any questions about preparing for your appointment, we are always happy to discuss them with you.
